Tanith Belbin visits Youth Olympics Sports Lab (video)

Aug 26, 2014, 3:20 PM EDT

Retired Olympic ice dancing silver medalist Tanith Belbin visited the Sports Lab at the Youth Olympics, a designated area to showcase four non-Olympic sports.

Belbin got an up-close look at roller skating, skateboarding, sport climbing and wushu. The sports aim to one day be part of the Olympic program.

“For the four sports, it is a great opportunity to present themselves in an Olympic environment,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said last week. “Wushu is a great traditional Chinese martial art with a dynamism that you would have not necessarily expected and a great balance between body and mind. Climbing is displayed in a very exciting form and presents a high level of technical skills. Skateboarders are using the city as a field of play and it is just breath-taking to see what they are doing on the halfpipe. Each kid at some stage has practiced roller sports but what we see here is close to perfection. Roller sports is really breath-taking.”

NBCSN coverage of the Youth Olympics continues on Tuesday (7-9 p.m. ET) and Wednesday (7-8) and concludes Thursday with the Closing Ceremony (6:30-8).
