IRVINE, Calif. — Michael Phelps qualified for the 200m individual medley final at the U.S. Championships on Sunday, setting up his fourth and last attempt to win his first title of the meet.

Phelps, the three-time Olympic champion in the 200m IM, won his preliminary heat in 1:58.74. It was the fourth-fastest time over all prelim heats.

He will face a field including Ryan Lochte in the final Sunday at 9:50 p.m. ET. NBCSN will have coverage from 11 p.m.-midnight.

Phelps previously finished seventh in the 100m freestyle, second in the 100m butterfly and sixth in the 100m backstroke this week.

He has qualified for the year’s major international meet, the Pan Pacific Championships, where he can enter any individual event he wants.

The Pan Pacific Championships are in Gold Coast, Australia, from Aug. 21-24.

Also Sunday, 12-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin qualified sixth for the 50m freestyle final, which will be her last chance to make the Pan Pacs team.
