Michael Phelps placed second in his 200m freestyle heat and was fifth fastest overall from the top seeded heats, qualifying for the event final at the Santa Clara Grand Prix on Saturday.

Phelps, in his third meet since taking 20 months off following the London Olympics, clocked 1 minute, 49.61 seconds. He swam 2.08 seconds faster than in his only other 200m free since 2012, in the prelims of the Charlotte Grand Prix on May 16.

Phelps is slated to face Olympic 200m free champion and training mate Yannick Agnel of France in the final (Universal Sports and UniversalSports.com, 8 p.m. ET).

On Friday, Phelps tied for a win in the 100m butterfly and took second in the 100m free. He is scheduled to swim the 200m individual medley on the meet’s final day Sunday.

Missy Franklin, in her only Grand Prix meet this season, was second fastest from the women’s 200m free heats and third in the 200m backstroke heats. Olympic champion Allison Schmitt also qualified for the 200m free final Saturday night.

Americans are preparing for the summer’s two biggest meets, the U.S. Championships and Pan Pacific Championships in August.
