WADA satisfied with Tyson Gay’s suspension

The World Anti-Doping Agency will not appeal U.S. sprinter Tyson Gay‘s retroactive one-year doping ban.

“After careful review and scrutiny of the full case file, WADA is satisfied that Mr. Tyson Gay provided substantial assistance to USADA in an appropriate fashion,” its statement read. “WADA will therefore not appeal USADA’s decision which is compatible with the World Anti-Doping Code.

WADA will make no further comment at this stage given that further inquiries are ongoing.”

On July 3, Gay is scheduled to race for the first time since he revealed one of his positive drug tests.

Gay received a reduced ban for “providing substantial assistance,” the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said when it announced Gay’s suspension May 2.

The WADA Code notes that “substantial assistance” includes fully disclosing all information an athlete possesses in relation to the doping violation and implicating other individuals.

The American record holder in the 100m had all of his results since July 15, 2012 disqualified and has returned his 2012 Olympic silver medal in the 4x100m relay to the U.S. Olympic Committee, though it has not been decided if his relay teammates will also be stripped of their medals.

Gay is slated to race against at least one of his Olympic relay teammates, Justin Gatlin, on July 3 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
