Krakow is withdrawing its bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics after residents of the Polish city voted against it Sunday.
“Today we are starting talks with the Olympics Committee on how we can withdraw from the Winter Olympics 2022 project,” Krakow mayor Jacek Majchrowski said in a press conference, according to Reuters. “I think it is bad news, but this was the citizens’ will.”
Nearly 70 percent of voters were against trying to bring the Olympics to Poland for the first time.
The race for the 2022 Olympics is now down to four cities — Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing; Lviv, Ukraine and Oslo.
Lviv may also drop out due to the current situation in Ukraine.
Oslo’s bid faces questions over the Norwegian capital’s public and financial backing.
Stockholm dropped its campaign in January due to financial costs before the deadline to officially submit bids in March.
The International Olympic Committee’s executive board will decide which cities advance to a final stage in Lausanne, Switzerland, from July 7-9.
The IOC will vote to select the host city on July 31, 2015, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Beijing, which hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics, could become the first city to host both a Summer and Winter Games. Oslo hosted the 1952 Olympics. Kazakhstan and Ukraine never hosted an Olympics.
