Former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell has appealed his doping suspension to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and wants it cut to three months, according to Agence France-Presse.

No date for his appeal hearing has been set, according to AFP.

Powell, 31 and a three-time Olympian, was banned 18 months in April for a positive drug test last June. The suspension was backdated, meaning he could return to competition Dec. 28 of this year.

A statement on Powell’s website in April said that the sprinter planned to appeal.

“This ruling is not only unfair, it is patently unjust,” the statement read. “Panels such as these, I understood, were assembled to allow athletes who, consciously or unconsciously come into conflict with the rules of sport, a chance at equitable redemption. Unfortunately, this was not the case.”

Powell’s Olympic teammate, Sherone Simpson, also appealed her 18-month suspension, according to AFP. Powell and Simpson both tested positive for the banned stimulant oxilofrine in June. Trainer Chris Xuereb was blamed.
