Mexico reportedly won’t bid for 2024 Olympics

Apr 1, 2014, 9:32 AM EST

Mexico has studied a possible 2024 Olympic bid and reportedly concluded that it is not feasible.

A political sports commission headed by Felipe Munoz, the 1968 Olympic 200m breaststroke champion, decided “there were no economic or infrastructure conditions,” according to GamesBids.com.

The report was backed by longtime Olympic journalist Alain Lunzenfichter.

Mexico has hosted the Olympics once, in Mexico City in 1968.

The U.S. Olympic Committee is considering bidding for the 2024 Olympics, narrowing potential candidate cities late last year to a group that reportedly includes Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and San Francisco.

Other potential 2024 bids could come from Paris, Italy and South Africa. Africa has never hosted an Olympics, though Durban announced it was bidding for the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Monday. An African nation has also never hosted the Commonwealth Games.

Bidding for the 2024 Olympics begins in 2015. The host city will be chosen in 2017.
