Declan Farmer scored twice, and Steve Cash notched a shutout to lift the U.S. past Canada 3-0 in the Paralympic sledge hockey semifinals Thursday.
The defending Paralympic champion U.S. advanced to Saturday’s gold-medal game where it will face Russia, a 4-0 winner over Norway in an earlier semifinal in Sochi.
It’s a rematch of a group-play game won by the Russians, who are competing in the event for the first time at the Paralympics.
Farmer scored two goals in a five-minute span in the first period against Canada. Josh Pauls added a second-period goal, which was more than enough cushion for Cash, who stopped all 11 shots.
Also Thursday, the U.S. wheelchair curling team lost 8-7 to Great Britain in its final game of the tournament. It finished 4-5 and failed to advance to the semifinals.
Three sets of medals were awarded in Alpine skiing, but no Americans made the podium in sitting, standing or visually impaired slalom.
The U.S. has eight medals, but no gold, with three days of competition left. Russia leads the medal table — by a mile — with 50 medals and 18 golds.
