Bode Miller won’t ski in slalom, ending his Olympics

Bode Miller decided that the giant slalom will be his last Olympic event in Sochi after tweaking his surgically repaired left knee, the Associated Press reports.

Miller was scheduled to participate in the slalom, but decided against it after two giant slalom runs. He hurt his knee in the first of two runs but decided to go through with a second one anyway.

The natural question is: will this be Miller’s last Olympic event ever? He’s already the oldest Olympian to ever win a U.S. skiing medal at 36 and would be participating as a 40-year-old if he skied in 2018.

If this is it, he shouldn’t finish with any regrets. He tied for bronze during an emotional super-G run to become the most decorated skier in U.S. history and honored his brother Chelone on Sunday before decorating his gloves to wish his daughter Neesyn a happy birthday on Wednesday.

And, of course, he took time to congratulate his colleague Ted Ligety.

Maybe it wasn’t a flawless ending to Miller’s career, but it was dramatic and captivating … so maybe this would be a fitting end.
