Two-time Olympic champion Shaun White pulled out of the Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships snowboard slopestyle final with an ankle injury on Sunday.

White, who is attempting to make the first U.S. Olympic snowboard slopestyle team, said Saturday he “hyperflexed” his left ankle in the halfpipe final, where he fell in his first run and finished second to Greg Bretz.

It was posted on White’s social media accounts that he sprained an ankle. He’s seen in an Instagram photo published Sunday with his left ankle in a bucket.

White suffered a right ankle injury in New Zealand in August.

Canadian Mark McMorris, the two-time reigning Winter X Games champion, dominated Sunday’s final in White’s absence. White was the top qualifier into the slopestyle final even though McMorris is considered the Olympic gold-medal favorite.

The Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships in Breckenridge, Colo., marks the first of five Olympic selection events for freeskiing and snowboarding. The next event is next weekend in Copper Mountain, Colo.

The U.S. Olympic Snowboarding Team selection process allows for a discretionary selection, meaning an athlete may be named to the team even if he or she does not compete in selection events.
