This event is not contested at the Olympics, and it was the first final this week without an American in the field. Cameron van der Burgh, the Olympic champ in the 100, was one tenth of a second off his world record. He won by the smallest margin possible, .01, for his second world title in the 50 breast (2009). Christian Sprenger adds silver to his gold in the 100 earlier this week. South Africa has now won three medals Wednesday.
