At about 5-2, 100 pounds, Torino Olympic silver medalist Sasha Cohen was the perfect size for a star figure skater like the one she played on TV all those years, but at 28-years-old, she’s apparently interested in a different sport all-together: rugby.
The famous figure skater, who’s now just your standard issue Sophomore at Columbia University in New York, told USA Today that she’s been changing everything about her life recently, including reverting back to her birth name, Alex. And rugby, or course.
“I was trying, but people convinced me not to join the rugby team,” Cohen explained. “They were like, ‘You’re going to die.’ Conceptually I think it’s a good idea, but we’ll see. They are big girls.”
“One day I want to play. I just feel like my ear will be ripped off and my nose will be broken and three teeth gone and I would be like, ‘Is that really such a good idea?’”
Cohen, who was in Omaha over the weekend to promote her new line of skates and enjoy her first U.S. nationals as a fan, says she’s able to mostly fly (skate?) under the radar on campus, and has only been recognized by a few students and professors in her two years as Alex the student.
