Just because you excel at something doesn’t mean you shouldn’t continue out of fear of dominating or embarrassing your competition. To me, it would really invalidate anyone else’s accomplishments if she weren’t in the field at regionals or states. Imagine the stigma attached to being the Colorado State Champion… BECAUSE Missy Franklin chose not to compete. I’d rather have the silver medal and be able to say, “hey, Missy Franklin only beat me by “x” time in the State Finals”. Don’t we already “dumb down” things in this country too much?
